1] WHY MAIZE?
Maize or corn can be very useful. It is eaten by man and also consumed by animals. The USA is the largest producer and consumer perhaps of corn. It is used for pizza and other such foods. In Africa, it is used in making pap, tuwo, starch and different other foods across cultures and ethnicity.
2] WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MAIZE AND POULTRY?
Maize or corn is the major component of poultry feeds. Both broilers and layers need maize. A drop in corn production will lead to increase in the cost of poultry due to increase in the price of feeds. Many developing countries lack the capacity to produce sufficient maize crops to cover the need for maize. This has lead to imports. This scenario implies that a market exists for corn if and only if one can also go into its local production.
3] WHAT ARE GOVERNMENT LAWS ABOUT MAIZE AND POULTRY?
The federal government of Nigeria banned the importation of maize In June, 2020. The aim was to increase local production and capacity and create jobs for the local population. The policy is well aimed but it has NOT been a success as local production is yet minimal and not met the local demand. This has caused a drastic rise in the price of corn and hence an increase in the cost of producing poultry. Many poultry farmers have been forced to close shop. A poultry farmer said the cost of a fowl may rise at Christmas in December, 2020 from the previous range of three thousand naira to ten thousand naira due to shortage of corn. This is threatening at least one million jobs.
4] WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF COVID -19 ON POULTRY FARMS?
The lockdown has sent many poultry farms and farmers to their early grave. Many others are about to call it quits. This is because maize needed to produce feed is absent /scarce /expensive if available.
5] HOW HAS THE PRICE OF MAIZE INCREASED?
The price of maize was N89/kg early 2020. By November, 2020 after the COVID-19 lockdown and ban on importation, It has risen to N 190/kg. The price of poultry products has increased too but not as much as the price of feeds. This has lead to a drop in profit margin to poultry farming.
6] HOW IMPORTANT IS MAIZE TO POULTRY?
Fifty percent (50%) to eighty percent (80%) of chicken feed in Nigeria is maize. Humans also consume maize and maize products in large quantities.
7] HOW MUCH CAN FARMERS MAKE FROM MAIZE FARMING?
(The actual business plan)
About 60,000 fresh maize cobs are expected to be harvested from one hectare of maize.
Seeds that can yield 2 cobs per plant can be explored.
If 60,000 fresh maize cobs are harvested from one hectare of maize.
If each maize cob is sold for N15, one will earn a sales revenue of 60,000 * N15= N900,000 from one hectare of maize farmland.
That is income.
FOR THE EXPENDITURE, THE DETAILS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
Land preparation = N 60,000 + planting of seeds /hectare
Hybrid seeds = N 30,000/ hectare
Herbicides/insecticides = N 20,000
Fertilizers = N 60,000
Labour, e. t. c = N 100,000
Farm Security = N 60,000
Land can be free, rented or bought
Total expenditure = N 330,000
Profit from one hectare=Income – Expenditure
= N 900,000 minus N 330,000
= N 570,000 per hectare of maize
8] HOW CAN I GET LAND FOR FARMING?
- You can ask the government. Government is now interested in farming more than before
- You can ask private individuals who have large farm lands
- You can buy land in the bush for farming
