Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria is a Federal University located in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. ABU was founded on the 4th of October,1962. The University have had Vice Chancellor’s in total. Professor Norman Alexander (Physicist) became the first Vice Chancellor from 1961-1966. Professor Ibrahim Garba, the present VC of the University whose tenure will come to an end on the 30th of April 2020 will be succeeded by the newly appointed VC, Professor Kabir Bala on the 1st of May 2020.
Professor Kabir Bala who was announced new VC of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) on Wednesday, 22nd of January 2020 was born on January 7, 1964 at Unguwan Kanawa, Kaduna State. He studied Building at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and graduated with B.Sc.(Hons) in 1985. He graduated from the Department of Building. He later obtained his M.Sc. in Building Services in 1990 and PhD in Construction Management in 2001 at ABU..
He was a two-time Head of Department (HOD) of Department of Building from 2001-2006 and 2010-2014. He was also a Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Design from 2006 to 2008 and also served as Director of Academic Planning and Monitoring (DAPM) from 2010 to 2013. He became an Assistant Lecturer in 1990. He was Lecturer II in 1993, Lecturer I in 1998, Senior Lecturer in 2001, Reader in 2004 and finally a Professor in 2007. He is also a member of many organizations both national and international. Such associations include International Association of Housing Science (IAHS),USA. International Facility Management Association (IFMA),USA. Nigeria Institute of Building (NIOB), Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE), UK. among others.
In February 2013, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON). Also in 2013, he was appointed as a new Member of the Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC). The new VC of ABU said he prefers to be called Mallam.
