The Nigerian movie industry is unarguably the second largest in the world. Also, gone are the days when we cringe at the thought of seeing a Nollywood movie as more directors, producers and actors are bringing in their A-game to the industry. If you’ve seen The Wedding Party, Chief Daddy, King of Boys Up North, Merry Men, Living in Bondage (the remake), amongst others, then Sugar Rush is definitely a must-watch for you. The movie was officially released on the 25th of December 2019 and has no doubt been received with open arms by Nigerians.

Although the film has become a success, it initially met with some obstacles, one being a suspension by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB). In a post made on Instagram, the Producer of Sugar Rush Jadesola Osiberu announced thus:

“10Q so very much for the support that our lovely film Sugar Rush has received. Unfortunately, due to issues that are way beyond our control, Sugar Rush has been suspended from playing in cinemas.”

However, the Executive Director of NFVCB, Adedayo Thomas, cleared the air concerning some allegations making rounds in a statement published on the board’s Instagram account.

He said:

“we know that #BringBackSugarRush is currently gaining influence on Twitter with many speculating a proscription order on the movie ‘Sugar Rush’ and presuming the supposed action as a sign of government’s intention to stifle creativity. The movie has not just significantly increased box office revenues within a short period but has improved our cinematic culture which is the sine qua non for attracting the investment we so much desire as a nation. I, however, take responsibility for the gap in communication and the delay in granting final approval as the temporary approval given for the movie exhibition expired before we could release an official statement due to my preoccupation with extant responsibilities and a backlog of movies requiring approval as a result of the December rush. I am currently working with the distributor, producer, director and key actors to grant final approval for the resumed exhibition at cinemas.”

Well, viewers are glad all that is over now, and ‘Sugar Rush’ is back for good in cinemas nationwide.

Plot of the movie

After the Sugar Sisters, discover a whopping $800,000, the financial crimes commission and the supposed owners of the money come for them. Now to save themselves, they team up with unlikely allies and it’s a race against the clock to set things right. —Jadesola Osiberu (Producer)

‘Sugar Rush’ grossed ₦40 million in the opening weekend since the Christmas day release and has become the fifth highest grossing Nollywood film of the year 2019 (The Wedding Party 1 is the highest grossing) within such a short period. Currently, the film is one of the few to generate a whopping ₦100 million in Nigeria.

If you are still sceptical, then read on as I share three reasons why seeing the movie ‘Sugar Rush’ should be in your to-do list.

  1. The casts are some of your favourite faces, including: Adesua Etomi-Wellington (Susie Sugar), Bimbo Ademoye (Bola Sugar), Bisola Aiyeola (Sola Sugar), Omoni Oboli (Mrs. Madueke), media personality, Toke Makinwa, Olubankole Wellington, and even singer, D’banj makes his feature film debut in this movie.
  2. It has an IMDb (Internet Movie Database) rating of 8.1/10 which is impressive for a recently released movie. This also shows that the movie has positive review by viewers.
  3. Sugar Rush is an action-comedy; there are lots of comic relief scenes to keep you entertained and doubled up with laughter. What better way to unwind and ease off stress?

So, sit back, relax and enjoy ‘Sugar Rush’ from the comfort of your couch or at the cinema.

Have you seen this movie? What are your thoughts?

We welcome you heartily to this blog. The success doors were made of wood yesterday. Today they are made of steel. The keys of yesterday were big and made by local blacksmiths. The keys of today are small but open big doors. Some doors don’t even need any key. Some need you to approach them and then they open. Others need you to use remote control on them. Hence the need for new keys.
